Clothing quality has gone seriously downhill at all prices. I went to Macy's looking for a coat. I found one in a great color and decent shape, but tge way it was constructured meant the liner stuck out when you put it on. I tied on several colors and they all had tgat defect. The coats at Target were better made than that. I didn't find anything suitable, so I guess it means no knew coat for me. The one I have is ok but has some loose seams. It wasn't as well made as I would have hoped based on the brand, but it was a cheap find at Nordstrom Rack more than several years ago. I have found wool coats at Old Navy are not bad, and the prices are inexpensive.

I remember that Macy's bought out some of our good, locally owned high end department stores. Then the quality went way down. I'd put Kohl's in the Penney's and Sears category but Kohl's does have great sales so I think they'll stay in business. I think I've been to a Target only once so I don't know about it. If I want something, I go to the particular store that has that brand--like J. Jill or Chico's. I like Marshall's and T.J.Maxx too. Kohl's seems to be ok for costume jewelry and kids clothing but mostly everything else is low quality and the clothing is cheap and skimpy. Walmart is the bottom of the heap but I can find my dog food in there.

IZOD will soon be reviving their women's line as a licensed line; not sure how will the quality be in comparison to the men's line since it will be licensed out.

All of those stores focus on middle income consumers, but Macy's in-house lines are generally higher end than JCP and Kohls. And they carry higher end designers. I am sure their customers cross shop all of those stores, but you won't see a Michael Kors or Brahmin bag in Kohls or JCP. Macy's also has high end flagships, no such thing for JCP and Kohls.

But I wouldn't but JCPenney and Kohl's in the same class as Sears either, since both seem to carry more mid-range brands than Sears does. Their price points tend to be slightly above Sears.
