Valve’s platform often represents a substantial share of a studio’s revenue. Results from a recent Atomik Research study have been published. The survey indicates that many developers view Steam as a dominant force in the PC games market. The research surveyed 306 industry leaders from the United Kingdom and the United States. It found that for most studios, Steam contributes more than 75% of their income. 72% of respondents believe Steam holds a monopolistic position in the PC games market. Some developers are attempting to distribute their titles through alternative platforms, including the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Xbox Store, GOG, and itch.io. Around 80% of those surveyed plan to use alternative storefronts alongside Steam within the next five years. 75% of developers expect to see at least a tenfold increase in revenue by leveraging additional marketplaces and online stores.
